Session we are used to in UA (Universal Analytics) version refers to a group of user interactions with your website that take place within a given time frame. With Google Analytics 4, a new concept has joined our lives: engaged session. According to Google source, “engaged session is a session that lasts longer than 10 seconds, has a conversion event, or has at least 2 pageviews or screen view.”
If you noticed while installing Google Analytics 4, you can now configure Google tags. So, GA4 enables us to update the definition of “engaged session”. Here the steps to change engaged session definition in GA4:
1. In your GA4 dashboard, click on “Admin” and select “Data Streams” to chose your web stream.
2. Then you should click on “Adjust session timeout” under “Configure tag settings”.
3. In the last step, you will see the screen with the definitions of session and engaged session. As you change 10 Seconds to 5 Seconds, GA4 will start to count sessions longer than 5 seconds instead of 10 seconds as engaged session.
